The sixth annual Mayor’s Fourth of July Family Parade and Picnic at Falls Park was held last week-end. It's a nice event for the community started by former Mayor Dave Munson to celebrate the birth of our nation with the citizens of Sioux Falls. People are treated to free food and entertainment. This year's annual national birthday event was billed as Mayor Huether's 4th of July Parade and Picnic.
This artwork was on the T-shirts worn by volunteers at this year's 4th of July Parade and Picnic.
I wouldn't necessarily have commented on this but people have mentioned it to me and asked why he would name the parade and picnic specifically after himself. The moniker "mayor" is the name of the office, not a person. I suppose there are people out there who don't know who the mayor of Sioux Falls is so he needed to let people know that it was "his" parade and "his" picnic.
This guy, the mayor, is so full of himself it's getting really hard to take. Hopefully he will have lots of time to look in the mirror & admire himself after the next election- which can't come soon enough.
ReplyDeleteIf the mayor paid for the food, beverages and tee shirts he can use his name on the tee shirt. If the City of Sioux Falls (you and me as taxpayer)paid for it, it should be the Sioux Falls (not Mike Huether's)4th of July picnic. This is in poor taste and very egotistical.
ReplyDeleteThe annual 4th of July picnic takes a lot of hard work from countless volunteers. The person who spearheads those efforts, at least for the last 2-3 years, is a city employee who's name goes unheralded, yet gets the job done. Thank You Aimee Ladonski, City Sustainability Co-ordinator. Your efforts truly are recognized by those who work this event.

I thought it was kinda strange also, since I think in the past it has been 'The Mayor's 4th of July Picnic' but if taxpayers aren't footing the bill, who cares. As for the Christmas lights at the Falls, that should be all donations to. Maybe you should blog about that?
ReplyDeleteIf the City paid for everything then that was an early taxpayer contribution to Mikes reelection. Is this the business acumens we want?
ReplyDeleteIt is time for the local media to call attention to this idiotic mayor. Hopefully he cannot do much more damage in the rest of his term. How does one going about doing a recall vote?
ReplyDeleteThe food is donated. There is some city money spent on marketing.
ReplyDeleteIt takes many city staff hours to prepare for and execute the parade and picnic. To me that constitutes a lot of taxpayer support of these events.
ReplyDeleteDoes all this commenting on a City Picnic that has been going on a long time strike anyone else as petty? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe picnic is nice idea for city folks who want to gather for a free meal at Falls Park. I thought everything was donated and volunteers worked the event. I would imagine city staff time is involved in clean up though? Now if you tell me no city dollars of any kind were used in designing, printing and purchasing the tshits then Mike Huether I suppose can plaster his own name where ever he likes since he is always about Me, Me, Me (aka My Man Mike). Just tell us the City didn't pay for anything to do with his own name branding. Personally, it would just have been so much better to see Sioux Falls on the shirts.
ReplyDeleteI think hiring a couple of dudes from Labor Ready armed with crowbars to remove the plaque of Munson at the entrance to Falls Park would be money better spent. I'm just sayin' . . .
ReplyDeleteAs far as being petty - I think not. Last year the parade was named after Mayor Huether as well. It struck me odd then so I looked up the history of the parade. It was started by Mayor Munson and if I recall correctly, city employees put in a lot of their OWN time to run this event. I think it would show a lot more class to call this the Sioux Falls Fourth of July Parade.
ReplyDeleteWhat is expected? Enough of you voted for this clown! Anyone that would drive around in his personal vehicle custom painted with "My Man Mike!" campaign slogan on it is questionable. I'm sorry, whatever happened to humility? for that matter where is honesty and good old 'representing the people'?
ReplyDeleteMy first impression when meeting him during his campaign? 'He sure is ambidextrous with his lips cuz he can sure speak out of both sides of his mouth and the same time'! :0)
